Hippos Outside Lady’s Door in Zambia

imageErin and I share accommodations on the Safari which ranged from huts to beautiful rooms at lodges along the way. Our second night on the tour, we scored a river front cabin on a small cliff. Across the river we could spy on over nineteen hippos, called a raft of hippos, as they spent their day splashing in the water or lying on the river’s muddy bank. FullSizeRender4 The action packed day continued and we hit the road after a game drive and breakfast in Chobe National Park. We quickly reached the Zimbabwe border. Will and I got in line to obtain a combined visa for both Zimbabwe and Zambia. The joint visa would save us money and possibly time at the next border. The boarder officers informed us that the computer for processing the joint visas was down so they could only process the Zimbabwe – oh well. We left our passports and money then waited. About 10 minutes later, the officers told our tour guides they had the computer back up and running. We gave them the additional $20 USD fee and the joint visa was issued about 15 minutes later. Hello Africa!

Game Viewing at Chobe National Park, Botswana

Day 6

FullSizeRender4A long morning drive from Namibia found our safari at Thebe River Safari Lodge early in the afternoon. We quickly set up our tents and prepared for our evening activity; a Chobe National Park sunset cruise on the Chobe River. We boarded the pontoon style boat which had plenty of room for our group and situated the cooler full of drinks right in the center. We cruised up the river towards Chobe National Park in search of more wildlife.

FullSizeRenderAs soon as we left the dock, one of the Aussies notified everyone about a snake in the water. Our driver turned for closer inspection and we all saw a Monitor lizard swimming across the river. There were actually quite a few on the banks along with some crocodiles bathing in the sun. We ventured further into the park and were greeted by grazing elephants. They were in the shallow waters pulling up the grasses and whipping them around to get the soil off before popping them in their mouth. As our boat inched closer and closer, Continue reading
