Indulging in Brasov, Romania

View from Tampa

Our train arrived in Bucharest after a five hour mid-day train from Veliko Tărnovo. We walked to our hotel, Villa Romana, and were surprised to find a locked door with only a phone number. Because we don’t have working phones (which is becoming very annoying) we had to find one to borrow. A salon next door was closing but luckily we were able to catch one of the employees. When I called, the receptionist asked why we didn’t coordinate a check-in time as requested on the booking confirmation. We were then instructed on how to enter with a hidden key and told which room to occupy. While waiting for the receptionist to arrive and collect our payment, I re-reviewed the email and saw the unusual request hidden amongst the regular jargon that booking.com sends. They obviously don’t make it easy to find because another couple had the same issue a few hours later (and we were able to help them by using google hangouts since we were then on wifi).

Also while waiting for the check-in process to complete, Sara looked at a lonely planet guidebook that was available in the room. We planned one night in Bucharest but otherwise had no idea what we wanted to do in Romania. The guide confirmed Continue reading

Hiking the Beautiful High Tatras, Slovakia

High Tatras Lomnicky Stit from Valley TrainAfter a long day of traveling from Oswiecim, we arrived in Poprad, Slovakia for one night’s stay before heading to nearby mountains. Even though it was a weekday, we stumbled upon an outdoor market with vendors selling cold beer, succulent sausages, and hand crafted goods (plus a chance to be put inside a large balloon and float on top of a pool). 1_FullSizeRender1We tried some of the beer and sausages while enjoying the outdoor market in downtown Poprad. After doing a bit of souvenir shopping, we ate at a recommended Italian restaurant, La Primavera, for a surprisingly filling and cheap dinner.

Our hotel room was straight out of the fifty’s with wood paneling everywhere! Luckily, we were staying in Hotel Poprad only for one night because it was hot with no AC or even a fan, and spotty wifi. In the morning, we checked out and caught a train into the mountains. The High Tatras are a very small mountain range rising majestically over the surrounding plains. The entire range is about 80 kilometers long making it feel even more Continue reading

Hiking in Bergen, Norway

IMG_7611

After an overnight train from Oslo, we arrived to a rainy Bergen. We walked the few blocks from the train station to our hotel, Clarion Hotel Admiral, where my parents spent the night. We figured they were probably jet lagged and still sleeping at 7:30 but I didn’t feel too bad waking them up as we knocked on their hotel room door. As expected, we were greeted with two sets of tired hugs, but it felt great to see them again after seven months. We chatted and caught up in the hotel room until it was time for breakfast. The hotel included breakfast and it was easy to join them even though we had not yet checked in. The restaurant was packed with hotel guests and I could see why – the spread was astounding. There was several kinds of fish, freshly baked loaves of bread, a muesli bar, cold cuts, and even the classics like eggs and sausage. After eating as much as possible, I made sandwiches for later and then we tried to check into our room. I can see why Clarion has such good reviews because it kept getting Continue reading

Stalking Cats in South Luangwa, Zambia

Day 12

FullSizeRender41There was another early morning wake up in preparation for a full day searching for animals. Luckily, Nash was also up early so we had tea and coffee available before our morning game walk. There was an option to do a game drive, but after being cooped up in the truck, many decided it would be nice to walk around. We split into two groups, each with a guide and an armed security ranger. The guide explained to us that if we encounter any animals up close, the most important rule is to not run and let the ranger handle the situation.

Barely 100 meters from the start, we ran across Continue reading
