We said our goodbyes and headed south from Philadelphia with a stop in Miami. The two hour layover was plenty of time and we were excited while boarding for the final leg. Unfortunately, the airplane had an unforeseen issue shortly after takeoff. When the pilot informed the passengers that we would be returning to Miami, Will and I looked out the window and noticed the flaps were still down so we assumed that was the issue. Speed Walking through Sofia, Bulgaria

We arrived to the city of Sofia after an exhausting night of traveling through Greece. We excitedly exited the train station feeling the cooler air and walked several blocks to our hostel for the night. Will actually found Hostel Mostel had single rooms in our price range. We checked-in to a bustling lobby filled with the typical backpackers. The receptionist was extra inviting and took about fifteen minutes to get us acquainted and excited for the city. We were only planning on using Sofia as a stopover point, but the welcome made us happy we had arrived.

As we walked to the single rooms which were located a short walk away in an apartment block, we learned that our room not only included breakfast, but dinner as well! Excited to save some money, we joined the other backpackers at 7:00pm back in the Hostel’s main common area. The hostel employees were serving out three meal options: spaghetti, lentils with rice, and fried egg with and Asian style salad. Ancient Exploration in Athens, Greece

North Slope of the Acropolis

Arriving at the Athens Central Station after a bus and train from Patras was underwhelming. Instead of a typical large majestic station like we’ve seen in other European cities, it felt like we were in the middle of nowhere. There were only two tracks next to a tiny station building. At first, I thought we were in the wrong spot till I saw the faded station name hanging on a sign. Our place for the next three nights, Hotel Neos Olympos, was a short walk from the station in an aging Victoria’s style building.

Unwinding in Copenhagen, Denmark

Passing another ferry while crossing Fehmarn Belt

I was excited for the train from Hamburg to Copenhagen because I saw it’s one of the last places in Europe where a train is put on a ferry for part of the journey. As we secured our seat reservations, we learned that part of the scheduled train line was down for service so we would be transferred to a bus. Unfortunately, we were put on busses before the ferry across the Fehmarn Belt so we just boarded with all the other vehicles. The trip was still neat and it was nice to be able to walk around the ferry as a break from traveling.
